I was just brushing my teeth and a thought popped into my head. I'm softly planning a trip that will take me into a part of the world where it is advised to carry bear spray. It seems like a sensible idea to carry bear spray where grizzlies roam.
But my last hike took me through a part of the world where there are rattle snakes, however, I didn't carry a snake bite kit, or any gear specifically to handle snakes. Nor did it cross my mind while planning. I came across two rattle snakes on that trip.
I appreciate that the topic of animal safety, and safety gear in general tends to get people a little hot and bothered I'm going to carry the gear I feel is appropriate and others will do the same. I just found it interesting that bear related saftey seemed much more obvious to me than snake safety.
Do you find bears or snakes scarier?
