How do you drive your tarp/tent stakes? Angled of vertical?

I have always driven my tent stakes with a slight angle away from the tent. My reasoning was that I wanted to keep 90° to the vector force of the guy-line. However, I just read this paper and it claims staking vertically is best.
I want to know what you do and why.
