First of all - thanks to all of you on this sub for educating me tremendously on what my options are here. I haven't rethought the home networking situation for the better part of a decade and it's amazing how the landscape has changed.
Frontier is dropping 500 mbps service into my house next week (an upgrade from the 50mbps FiOS we've had for a decade), and I'm using that as an opportunity to redo/rethink the entire home network. We have cat5 wired pretty much throughout the house. I'll be replacing an old Apple Airport Extreme and a couple old Airport Expresses that were used to extend the Wi-Fi network (they're hardwired via Ethernet back to the Airport Extreme, which is connected directly to the FiOS router). Also using an old Netgear GS108 switch to connect the ethernet jacks to the network.
The house is about 3000 sf and is three levels. While it has a lot of open space, it's an architectural so it has a decent amount of concrete and stone separating floors and spaces.
My current plan is something like:
FiOS ONT --cat5--> Dream Machine --cat6--> USW-16-POE switch --cat5--> nanoHD access points (probably one on each level)
And then of course plugging my existing Ethernet wall jacks into the USW-16 switch.
But the more I read about the new Dream Machine Pro the more I'm wondering if it might be a better fit. However I haven't found any good DM vs DM Pro writeups to help me decide the pros/cons. I realize the DM Pro doesn't have wireless built in, but what else is there to think about?
Thanks again!
