I am thinking of investing in some Ubiquiti kit. I have VDSL (FTTC) coming on Thursday provided by PlusNet in the UK. I will use their stock router to start with but don't plan to stick with it. I also don't plan to stick with VDSL, this is a just a holding move until I can get Virgin Media to dig up my drive and put proper speed broadband in.
The kit I buy I want to work with both the VDSL PlusNet setup and the Virgin Media setup when I change to that. Having had Virgin Media in my previous house I know I can run their hub in modem only mode. I also want dual WAN to keep my options open for a second 4G connection.
So my proposed setup so far is...
- Modem: Huawei EchoLife HG612 FTTC VDSL NTE Modem (second hand off ebay, will be replaced in time with Virgin Router in modem only mode)
- Router: EdgeRouter Lite ERLiteโ3
- Main Switch: Ubiquiti TS-8-PRO
- Second Switch: Netgear GS308-100UKS
- Access Points: 3 x AP-AC-Lite
I would like to know if this looks like a sensible setup?
Regarding the Router is the ERLite a better option than the USG or EdgeRouter X? I have read a lot of comparisons between ERLite and USG. I am keen to have Dual WAN. If I should go with the USG or EdgeRouter X over the ERLite then why?
On the Main Switch I would like POE as want to power the Access Points from this switch. Is the ToughSwitch the right choice? What other POE switches could I consider that would power the AP-AC-Lite's? (I assume I need Ubiquiti switch to have the correct POE?)
On the AP-AC-Lite this is my house it is 250 SqMeters. I plan to put the access points on the 3 points marked. Red is where the phone socket is. So red marks where the modem, router, main switch and one AP will be. Green is where the second AP will be (wall mounted), and Blue is where the Second switch and final AP will be. Would this provide good coverage?
Any feedback or suggestions would be great. This is a significant outlay buying all this kit so keen to get it right first time.
