Let me tell you my tale of misery, anger, loss, and woe that occured while making deliveries today.
I picked up a double Walmart order this afternoon and went toward my first assigned drop off. At this point, everything was proceeding like a normal delivery. But when I made it to the complex the first delivery was going to, everything started going downhill.
I'm looking for the apartement and my phone begins to ring. I don't know the number and put it off, thinking they'd leave me a voicemail if they really wanted to get ahold of me. I find the building I need, park and start taking the groceries to the apartement. My phone starts ringing again. I finally get all the bags to the door, take the picture and get everything confirmed with that delivery.
My phone rings again for what I find out is the sixth time. I answer and it's from my second delivery. She is absolutely livid that I apparently drove right by her, taking her groceries. She tells me she spent her last money (that's exactly how she said it), that she has hungry kids she needs to take care of, that she's completely fed up with everything.
I try to calm her down. I try telling her that I had two orders, that I just finished with the first order, that I was on my way with her order and I'd be there shortly. She's still incredibly pissed off though awaiting my arrival.
I get off the phone and find that the app isn't directing me to that delivery. Instead, it somehow got confirmed as delivered and the money for the delivery was added to my total. But I still have a trunk full of groceries. If this lady's story is true, then I have no way of getting her the groceries she spent all her money on. She won't be able to feed her kids.
I call Uber and tell them what happened. They tell me that the app crashed and the order accidentally got counted as delivered. However they don't keep addresses for longer than the order is live. They can't help me and tell me to take it back to Walmart.
I try calling Walmart. They put me on hold for 20 minutes to half an hour to look up her address. They can't find it either and tell me to bring it back.
Now I'm angry. I have no reason to believe the customer who called me is lying so now I'm pissed off that I told her I was on my way and will never show up. She needed those groceries and now she won't get them.
If Uber keeps our tips on hold for an hour after the delivery, why can't they keep customer information on hand for longer than the order is live for situations like these?
