How do first year dorms exactly work if going random?

Hi everyone. I’m an incoming international student who’s gonna be a first year this fall. I understand that if I do not have a roommate beforehand, UVA picks one randomly. But is there some sort of survey that UVA provides in order to find someone even remotely close to my personality. Just wondering if it’s purely random or if they have some kind of roommate/personality survey that many colleges have before placing you with a roommate.

Also, can someone elaborate on the International Residential College and if it’s worth it as a first year international student?
