Hi all. I lurk here frequently, and have since last year. Even with that knowledge, here I am. Doing something very different from middle management. I hope to never be management again.
I start orientation on the 6th. I get my office assignment next week. It will no doubt be a city office in the Portland area.
I’ve scoured the sub for newbie items recommendations (even items needed for PNW specifically.) I have a solid grasp of the failures of management (both contractually and developmentally). I very much will be studying the contractual requirements and not trusting management or “this is how we’ve always done it”. I’ve learned in my time how toxic an environment can be without holding management accountable.
My question is specifically:
Safety items I may need in an unknown part of Portland. (Like many people here in the region, I do carry narcan). And the legality of using them (also narcan. I hope I never have to).
As a PTF (its label as career and I received a benefits summary. Unsure if that matters) what can I expect?
I hope beyond hope I get a walking route. I am also curious as to how soon that maybe. Anyone with Portland experience would also be helpful. I do welcome all to answer.
Anyone who has a recent (10 yrs or less) entry into the system, how are you? Are you able to maintain the long term picture of retirement?
I am fairly young at 32. With the hope of being able to stick it out.
I thank you all and appreciate your expertise.

Appreciate you! Definitely overblown rumors. I love to come into Portland and do weekend stuff.
