I moved to the UK from NY on July 2019.
I definitely filed my 2019 federal tax returns. NY state received my state tax returns, but not federal. I sent my federal tax return to Austin, Texas, and it arrived there (according to tracking) so I assumed everything was fine. This was back when the USPS was all messed up, so it arrived there like a week late even though we sent it to the post office early. Anyway, I was owed money which I never received. I mailed my 2019 taxes on June 4, 2020.
Regarding my stimulus checks – I received the first one by paper check, but not the second. The IRS coronavirus portal says Payment #2 Status - Not Available. According to several media outlets, this means that I am not getting it, and have to claim it on my 2020 federal tax returns. How do I know that they will receive my 2020 tax returns, if they never acknowledged my 2019 tax returns?
Another detail that I think might be important – my old US bank account was recorded on my 2018 tax return, which I since closed. I opened a different US back account that won't charge me annual fees. I put this new one on the 2019 tax returns, but since the federal government never "received" it, they don't have it on file, which probably explains why I'm not receiving the second stimulus check.
I'm at a loss. I don't know what to do. What are my next steps? Do I need to send the 2019 tax returns again? I'll try mailing my 2020 tax return early. Did I do something wrong? Did I send it to the wrong place? Why was I never notified of any errors? Who can I contact (preferably email)?
