I’m about to go through a divorce - what should I be doing now to prepare for my life post-divorce in terms of budgeting and saving?
Post Body

My husband and I are throwing the towel in after nearly 7 years of marriage and will be getting a divorce. I came to the UK from the US and lived with my husband in London right away. He has been responsible for a majority of the finances during the whole marriage as his wage was much higher than mine (more than double at least), but this split means I will need to take the reins for my own life in the near future. I plan to stay here as I have my ILR and will go for citizenship eventually.

I think I have some time before making major decisions as we have not yet started the bureaucratic process and we also need to sell the flat (mortgage is in both our names for sake of information) but best to start looking out now. I’m on a wage of about £33k and will also be taking my dog when we split so will be taking on the associated costs of having a pet. Historically I haven’t been great with my finances but I feel like I need to be more on point now especially living and working in a very expensive city. At the moment I’m putting away £200 a month now and just tightening up expenditures where I can to start, but want to make sure I’m doing all I can to prepare.

Any resources or advice you have would be amazing. If there’s any other info I can provide that will be helpful, let me know.
