Alternatives to baby gates, or different style ones?

We have an open plan house, the living room openly connects to the stair case and kitchen.
There is no solid wall either side, so we can't put up a traditional baby gate unless its at the bottom step. However, this does not stop the kid getting into the kitchen, any thoughts?
