I’m 26 and have been working at a small games studio for the last 2 years and 9 months from home. I graduated with a BSc in Games Technology in 2019.
I joined the team as a Game Programmer, but my role shifted into Level Design towards the end of last year. I don’t think I was ever the best technical programmer, I suppose I’m competent, but I felt a lot more passionate about and attuned to level design.
But over the last year or two my interest in games and but evaporated. My first year at the studio was very intense, which led to burn out, anxiety, and then apathy about the whole thing.
I’m on my notice periods now, and I don’t feel the need to find work in games. If a well paying role came up I wouldn’t dismiss it, but I don’t feel tied down to only finding a job in games anymore. Might even be nice to do something a bit different. The flip side of that is that I really don’t know what other work I’d look at, what might suit my skills, experience and so on.
Some further information, I have a disability that affects my mobility and speech. This year I’ve started making serious efforts to work on my health, swimming regularly, speech therapy etc. My disability is neurologically based and made worse by stress and anxiety, so I’ve been trying to minimise that in my life. This is all tied up with my self confidence, which has definitely improved too.
I’m single, and live with my parents. So I’m quite fortunate not to be living paycheck to paycheck. I have a nice amount saved away so I can afford to take a bit of a break and think about what I want to do next… which is pretty much my current plan.
Would be nice to do something that gets me out of the house more. I’d like to do some work that increase my confidence and allows me to meet new people. Or maybe I’ll retrain and study, I really don’t know, this is all off the dome.
All of this is to say I think this could be a good opportunity for a career change. Any thoughts on fields or jobs that might suit me and my situation which I could look at?
