How to get started designing a rich web UI?
Post Body

I'm interested in creating a (web-based) interface for a powerful plotting tool called gnuplot (http://www.gnuplot.info). I've been able to sort out some of the more difficult technical bits, but I am not an interface designer and not sure where to get started when working on the UI.

I've tried looking at screenshots of other GUIs for this program on Google, and nothing seems to stand out as ideal (to me), so I want to try my hand at designing something different from scratch. I was wondering if anyone has ideas on how to best explore ideas and options for more complex interfaces.

If it helps, I do have intermediate competence with Sketch.
