Hey everyone. I am a year of 2022 graduate that still lurks here a bit. It looks like registration has started soon, so for returning, current and new students, this is how to deal with it with finesse.
Order of registration:
Honors and DRC Students
Number of college credits
Time of orientation for incoming students
I say number of college credits because AP credits don't count for registration times.
Common registration holds and how to clear them:
Advisement holds: You need to go schedule and advisement appointment via SAGE. You aren't required to follow their advice at all, but you are required to do it unless told otherwise. Incoming students will do this when they register for ornamentation. Keep in mind for every school you pursing a degree in, you will need advisement for that that school.
Immunization holds: For incoming students, you will need to send UHC's your vaccines records. You likely will need to get some vaccines schedules completed if you haven't been in a while. Most doctors will can update all the ones you need in one go. Here's the required vaccines. COVID-19 and HPV vaccines aren't required but, i'd recommend you to get them.
Emergency contact holds: Just update and confirm them via Student Information in Athena to clear it. This hold reoccurs once every calendar year.
Students Account holds: If you have any outstanding library, parking, or other fines, they need to be paid before your allowed to register. Keep in mind that housing, tuition and academic fees are not due until midnight of the last add/drop day and do not block your ability to register.
Students Account acknowledgement holds: This checkbox that basically says you agree to play the balance of your student account in good faith and due time.
How to intelligently register
You always register through Athena itself. There aren't any officially licensed or sanctioned software or personnel to do it for you outside of on site DRC services.
So, you go to register and you will be be given an option to search through for classes/sections via lists and register each class individually....or you can just enter course IDs and hit enter. You'll want to just gather your course IDs, enter them, hit submit and register all classes at once.
So how do you find course IDs and sections without Athena? Use UGA Courseoff. As of Spring 2022, this has always worked for me. You don't need to worry about Athena being slow, down for maintenance, having to log in, or any of that fun stuff. Information such as class time, professor, and slots filled/total are also provided.
The what and whens of your degrees and classes
When it comes to what you need to do to graduate and your classes and how ahtorative the information is:
Bulletin > Your advisor > Degreeworks.
Bulletin is the most frequently updated. Advisors are often hit or mess, but they are the most aware of whats going on in your department. Degreeworks is a convince service and it can take a while to get updated.
Also, before going into advisement meetings, you should come in with a general plan of what you want to take for that semester, including freshmen and transfers. Advisors can give you advice if your plan is a bit much, professor teaching styles but they tend to not be super update on specific degree requirements.
I'm stuck in a waitlist, what to do?
Honestly, if you are stuck in a deep (10 ) person wait list the chances of you making it through the waitlist by the time of the first day of classes is pretty low. Speaking of first day of classes, that's when the registrar forcibly empties all wait lists any way.
Don't fret, especially for freshman level and sophomore level classes, if there is huge unfilled demand for classes many departments will open up a new section, except if its discussion based or a seminar class. Remember to come up with alternatives to classes or an alternative schedule if things don't work out during add/drop week.
If one professor or course is a must have, download coursicle with your app, pay for the premium and it will notify you as soon as an opening for one class is available, and you can race to claim your spot. The premium is worth it if you are hunting down multiple courses. It's like half a Chickfila meal at Tate.
I'm not sponsored by Courseoff or Coursicle, I just know that UGA is a big school and that can make registration really cutthroat. In addition increasingly popular majors like MIS and CS are going through growing pains so you just can't mess around.
Let me know if anything is confusing or misspelled!
