Just a guess but since this is the school newspaper, I'd imagine the staff would face some kind of backlash, if not red tape from UCI admin if they published any news that paints UCI in a not so favorable light. Some of the valid points you mentioned tarnish the UCI reputation - safety and crime, traffic and parking issues, etc.
