I was just speaking to a student employee was told a story of a final that student just took for a class. The final required the person to take a test outside of class and be visible via webcam for the duration of the test. Moreover, the student had to show the person viewing watching (proctoring) via webcam around the room (typically a bedroom) and behind the camera as a "cheat prevention" inspection.
Oh, and the student had to pay $15 for the mandatory honor to be watched via webcam.
This entire concept is new to me. When I was a student at UCI, my student cohort would have protested this requirement vehemently. First, the problem is that you have to allow an unknown person to view your living area. Second, your tuition pays for classes and tests alike. Why should you have to pay more money just to take a final? Lastly, where are the actual TAs? Are we outsourcing TA duties, now?
Who here has been required to take a final like this? Were there protests?
