For me it's Peter F. Hamiltons Commonwealth Saga and the Silfen Paths. It seems like something that rings with a hint of truth.
"The Silfen paths are a system of interplanetary transportation conduits used by the Silfen. As their name suggests, they take the form of woodland paths that lead from the forests of one planet to another, most of which are at least partially suitable for sustaining life.
The paths seem to operate similarly to wormholes, but the transition between endpoints is far more gradual and subtle, with the surroundings slowly changing as one walks from one planet to the next. The paths also disable most, if not all electronics, including quantum and standard components, while only organic and some semi-organic components retain their functionality, although the method this is accomplished by is unknown."
