Combat Patrol or New Models

My friend and I were trying to get into 40k, I wanted to do tyranids. Super simple question: should I get the current combat patrol or start collecting, or should I wait for the mew models?
Also, I've never played Warhammer before so I don't know if Nids are even a good place to start, I just like hivemind space bugs. If I could get help with that too, that'd be awesome.
