Remington #12 help!
Post Body

Hey group! First off pardon my ignorance with typewriter anatomy and parts nomenclature! Im learning as i go! I just bought this Remington #12 from a thrift shop, as a gift for a writer friend. I love to tinker, fix, rebuild, restore all sorts of things so its kind of a gift for me too. We are both realistic about it possibly might not ever be usable, but at least make it a pretty decoration for her home. Obviously i have my work cut out for me. My plan was to vacuum out as much loose dirt and grass etc as possible using a toothbrush to get as much junk out with dry cleaning. Then use a spray cleaner (recommendations please) with rags, q-tips etc. I would rather not do a full tear down but at least in 2-4 or 5-6 assembly parts to then have certain non-painted parts soaked in evapo-rust. Am i on the right track????
Also if someone could steer me in the direction of any places that sell replacement parts, specifically the feet. I have 3/4 intact feet, and need one complete foot (two piece screw, top cap, and rubber sole). Also the top plate(?) were the Remington logo used to be is completely faded, but you can see the outline of the letters at an angle. Can this be repainted? I would even consider sending to a professional to have it done right. The back spine(?) is broken in two as well. Seems like its made of cast iron. Definitely ferrous cuz it hold a magnet. I might attempt a couple of tack welds to see they at least hold everything in place??? Any other thoughts, ideas, or guidance would be greatly appreciated!
