the casual sexism on reddit can be fucking depressing
Post Body

i regularly find myself pissed & in a shitty mood because of it. this is too common of a scenario:

  • either 1. redditor wants karma so makes up some fake relationship story where the evil wamen cheats with chad to get incel clout, OR 2. somebody with legitimate issues within their relationship with their gf/wife posts for advice

  • comments flooded with “she belongs to the streets”, “AWALT”, “leak her nudes”, and general sexism, etc etc and they all have countless upvotes

and don’t get me wrong, i think people who cheat in relationships are absolutely in the wrong. however, the issue i have is that when these men comment shit like that, they aren’t insulting that one cheating woman. they feel this way towards ALL women. it feels fucking shitty, and NOBODY checks them for it because they’re surrounded by likeminded men. if you say anything, you’re downvoted and harassed.

i don’t know, i just need to vent. i like reddit as a platform because of it’s unique format, and that it has more anonymity than other major social medias, but the general audience is really toxic and it makes me want to just leave. and you can’t just stay on subs made specifically for women either, because creeps and misogynists will just come here to harass us. it’s mentally exhausting.

edit: i didn’t expect this post to blow up at all, thank you so much for all your love, support and awards. however, i want to clarify some things.

  • the post was not made to say that it’s okay when a woman cheats, or that men are bad for being upset at cheaters. i think cheating is absolutely vile, as i stated before. the point i made was that i’ve seen countless obviously fake stories where the woman is made into the “bad guy”, and misogynists on reddit eat it up because they can use it as an excuse to comment sexist bullshit.

  • the example i brought up is not the only example of casual sexism on reddit. i brought it up because that’s the thing that prompted me to make the post. as you’ll see in the comments, there’s so many more examples experienced by me and other women. like the way we can’t even post a picture of ourselves, or even MENTION we’re a woman, without being sexualized. how we can’t even stay on our own subreddits because they will just seek us out to harass us.

  • “iT’s ThE iNtErNeT, jUsT LoOk aWaY” ...i do. that’s why i came to this subreddit to vent, there’s only so much bullshit you can look at before it starts to wear you down. you have to get it off of your chest. is that not what this sub is for? to share the experiences we have as women and get frustrations off of our chest? unfortunately, i was met with tons of argumentative comments trying to invalidate my experience. but i really want to thank all the lovely comments and messages i’ve received for assuring me that i’m not fucking crazy.
