I recently learned about the existence of Saheli. It is a non hormonal and non steroidal contraceptive pill, you have to take it only once a week (twice the first 3 months) and the side effects are almost non-existent. It has also shown great promesses in preventing hormonal cancers.
The thing is, it's only available in India. From what i've read it is because the active molecule (ormeloxifene) has been developed in India and to market it in another country, said country will have to redo all the testing and approving from zero. It's costly and because there are already contraceptive pills available in most countries, it is not considered something interesting to market.
I'm not a doctor and not a scientist at all so I have very little understanding of what is necessary to market a new medecine. But that makes me so angry. It seems such a great solution for people who can't take hormonal birth control and yet... Nobody cares.
Can someone explain me why? Is there any hope to have it available somewhere else any time soon?
