Just posting here to nag about an interesting policy in my country, please DON'T mention the specific location under the post, as I don't want extra problems or arguments. However, if you're curious, feel free to look it up.
Since January of 2021, if a couple wants to get divorced here, they need to hand their application to civil affairs department, then wait for a 30 day 'cooling-off' period. During the period, if either of the couple wants to withdraw the application, the divorce procedure could be terminated.
In 2023, a woman shared her story of being abused by her husband for 16 times in 2 years, leaving lifelong disability. After the domestic violence, she applied for protection order, moved away, used someone else's id to purchase a phone card, but was still caught by her husband, confined and beaten to coma after the first failure of suing for divorce. A man also managed to kill his wife and injured her relatives during the 'cooling-off' period.
Before the issue of the 'cooling-off' period, filing for divorce was already difficult here, gambling, domestic violence, even rape might be considered insufficient reasons for divorce. However, the logics behind the policy is not fundamentally wrong — if nobody is getting married, then nobody is getting divorced.
