Context: I’m 5’4 and 298lbs. I’m okay in my body but I’m cognizant enough of my family medical history that I try and be proactive. This was my first visit to cardiologist since I just turned 40 and lost several aunts/uncles in their 40s/early 50s to cardiac issues. I had previously done blood work in prep for this.
We go in and first off no judgement at the scale. Doing intake info, They take my BP in both arms and do an ekg . They prick my finger and test my blood sugar bc of my heavy family history. 3/4 grandparents, 1/2 parents, 2/3 older half siblings all are diabetic.
Then my doctor comes in. Asks why I’m there, I explain the proactive part. We go over all my numbers. My BP and blood sugar are perfect for “non-obese” people, A1Cs are great, blood work is really good, just slightly anemic. casually mention that’s great to hear as outside of me being a fat woman I do try and be healthy. We discussed my heart murmur and my pcos. Then he says “well since you mentioned it, you are in fantastic healthy shape for any 40 year old . Your numbers are better than mine. But if you have concerns that your weight can negatively impact your health as you age, we can discuss that or not. If you want to have that conversation it’s completely up to you and it will never be mentioned again unless your weight fluctuates dramatically. You’ve maintained the same weight from 2017 to now. Your blood work would show if you were not eating well. I’m not concerned about your weight. .”
It was so refreshing!
Note: I did inquire about how my celiac disease and PCOS makes it difficult to lose weight. He said that unlike the social media trends, some of those injectables were actually made for folks like me and if I was interested in those, he’d help make sure it was covered due to my family history.
