Let's talk about the shut up ring (a straight-ish guy's perspective)
Post Body

My girlfriend got me into Two Hot Takes when we first met, as we really enjoy Reddit stories. However, the one thing we cannot stop talking about is Morgan's and Justin's engagement and I cannot believe that there are not more threads discussing this.

Prior meeting my now gf I had no idea what a shut up ring was, but it makes sense.

When I was around Justin's age, I could have never imagined getting engaged let alone married to my then long time partner. And neither did she back then. We were both afraid of commitment. Thank god it was mutual. Justin's behaviour is reminiscent of what I probably would have done ten years ago if my then girlfriend wanted to engaged. Morgan has been talking about her wanting to get engaged, moved to tears in FKS and then got a ring right after. Justin does not seem excited about the wedding either, never talks about it. This feels like stalling by an emotionally avoidant guy in his 20s, who does not want to get married - which I was too. He's clearly too scared to voice his opinion, as he does not want to lose Morgan, and is buying more time.

Also, from my personal perspective - and I am not American, so not sure if this is just a cultural difference - I found it weird how Morgan meticulously planned her engagement. I would feel very strange even if my now gf did that. It's something that I want for us to plan together, and I would feel weird if she was planning it all out. It would feel very one-sided.

I don't know - do you guys have any thoughts?
