For this prompt, I thought Epel definitely suited the memory of this event the best.

âDagnabit! Why do these apples have to grow so high?â Epel had been jumping and climbing for the past ten minutes. He cursed not getting a ladder (more rather, not being able to carry one out) for work today. His ears tickled when a graceful chuckle swam into one and out the other.
âThank the Seven for givinâ us plenty of fruit this year.â
âI know what youâre really thinkinâ, Darrian. I donât need the gawkinâ today.â
Darrian pushed her full box of produce aside. âHold on, Epel, Iâll help ya.â She crouched into a squat and gestured for Epel to get onto her shoulders.
âYa serious?â
âDo I look like Iâm not?â
Epel sighed out of Darrianâs earshot and gave into the offer. He handed Darrian the apple sack and looped his legs, clutching Darrian by the lower shoulders. She slowly straightened her back and legs, hoisting Epel up to the higher branches. He warned her to watch where she was swinging him as Epel almost hit some of the thicker limbs of the tree. Most to Epelâs delight, he was at the appropriate level to observe some of the fruits properly. The apples that werenât rotten or invaded by bugs, he plucked from the stems and dropped them in the sack Darrian had opened below.
âThatâs the way, Epel! Thatâs the way.â
âThank ya, Darrian. I think a few more would do it.â
âI thought ya had ta fill the whole thing?â
âI do, but Iâll hurt ya if I stay here for long.â
âI can handle it. Ya do yer work, and I can keep ya company.â
Epel heavily sighed, continuing to drop the apples into the sack below him.
âYour bodyâs gettinâ heavy, Epel. Whatâs wrong?â
âOh, sorry.â
âNot that kinda heavy. Donât tell me ya jealous of my strength again.â
âNot in that way either.â Epel plucked another healthy apple, but this one had a beautiful shine. So much so that he could see his youthful reflection in it. The reflection irked him. âIâm annoyed at myself is all.â
âWhat do ya mean?â she asked.
Epel requested to return to the ground, to which Darrian followed through on. âYa seeâŚThe sports clubs at school attend this camp hosted by our coach. Ta teach about survival nâ teamwork nâ stuff. I did so well to keep the Spelldive team goinâ, but I donât know why I canât do that here.â
âWhat did ya do at this camp of yers?â
âThe usual. Settinâ a fire, huntinâ for food, buildinâ tents and all that. It was hard at first, but we managed it all. It proved to me that I was able to survive out in the wilâ myself. I canât even do that at home. I still canât even climb a tree.â
âClimbinâ trees is awfully dangerous, Epel. Itâs unwise.â
Epel slumped. âI get it. Iâm just imaginâ what it would be like if I was taller and stronger. I could do more and be useful around the village.â
Darrian took Epel by the chin and pulled him to her, so that their foreheads met. âNot everyone is good at everythinâ. Thatâs why we have roles in our little village. Each role is like a gear in a clock. If a gear is missinâ, the clock wonât tick. If the clock wonât tick, time becomes lost. If you are missinâ in our clock, Epel, the clock which is our village wonât work the same. The village would be lost. You know what Iâm sayinâ?â
Epel blushed. âI guess, butâŚâ
âBut nothinâ. Yeâr the best apple picker, wood chopper, nâ juice maker Iâve come across. Not everyone has the eyes nâ arms that ya do. I sure donât.â
âDarrianâŚâ
âYa can be whateva ya wanna be, Epel. That donât mean what ya have ainât good enough. Believe in yaself, ok?â
Epel blushed again. âYa right, Darri. I know I can. Now, letâs get these back home before they spoil.â
