Winter Date Ideas

I'm in the mood to plan some winter dates for my girlfriend and I. Ideally, I wanted to get away from the sporting event/music concert idea and do something with a bit more culture, like the ballet or phantom of the opera....but that shits expensive!! Not that I want the ideas to be cheap, but I just cant see myself spending $150 on something we both don't have much interest in. What would you suggest? What have you seen happening around town?
