Disclaimer: I am not vegan.

I believe that the language that is used regarding non-human animal companions objectifies them.

I do not understand how people are "okay" with calling themselves an "owner" of a cat, dog, etc.

They're living beings, not objects.

Saying that you're a cat/dog "owner" and then saying that they're a part of your family confuses me, how can someone "own" another living being and then say that they're family?

That makes no sense yet people seem to think it's "normal".

I think the word should be replaced with caregiver as that's what you are doing when you have an animal companion you are taking care of them.

Another thing I feel objectifies non-human animal companions is using the pronoun "it" when you do not know if they are male or female or worse when they know the sex of the animal but still refer to them as it e,g, calling a bull or cow it, they're male/female so shouldn't they by right be referred to by he/she and if you don't know the sex of them shouldn't they be called they/them?

I know that people are going to say that other animals do not have a concept of gender but I feel that doesn't matter, as they are not objects they shouldn't be called it.
