Living in 2024, it is virtually impossible to survive without these things, as modern society has made us more dependent on them. These two things are no longer luxuries like they were 20 years ago; they are necessities.
Don't believe me? Walk into any job interview and say "By the way, I don't own a cell phone and I don't get WiFi at home" and see if they hire you. This isn't just for corporate jobs; even if you're waiting tables or working as a janitor, you are expected to own a cell phone so that the manager can text you when a shift changes. Many public schools also have made the Internet part of how they conduct classes and expect students to turn in their homework electronically.
Given that these two things are treated as a given that everyone is expected to have, it's unfair to charge for these services and only add them to the cost of living. I've heard stories of parents having to drive to a McDonald's parking lot for an hour every single night because it was the only way their kids could turn in their homework.
There's no reason that we couldn't just have universal free WiFi at this point. There are satellites all around the planet.
