I'm going to start by subverting your expectations here, it's not what you think.

We'll call my boyfriend Jake and his best friend (who I live with) Eli. Eli's family kind of adopted me after my boyfriend ended up in jail. For privacy I would not like to share the details of his arrest, if you're REALLY curious DM me, but I don't want to post about it publicly.

For context, we all live in a state where delta 8 weed is legal, but paraphernalia like pipes and bongs can be seized by police during a search even if you were smoking delta 8 out of it. All of us are stoners, which is important to the story.

A few months ago, Me and Eli were pulled over driving another friend home for making an illegal left hand turn, I was given a $20 ticket but my car was searched as I admittedly smelled like weed. I was wearing my smoking hoodie, which for obvious reasons smelled VERY strongly as it had not been washed yet after maybe 5-6 hotboxes. It was just me, Eli, and a mutual friend so I wasn't worried about smelling like a daisy. The car was searched, and so was everyone in the car. We didn't have any weed (legal or not) on us, but my boyfriend's beloved first bong was in the backseat, wrapped in a blanket to keep it cushioned. The police understandably believed we tried to hide it, so they took it. Honestly, I had forgotten it was back there, as I hadn't been in the backseat of my own car for a while. Nobody drives it except me, so the backseat was kind of a lawless wasteland of other people's forgotten stuff.

The police advised me to change after smoking because you never know when you'll have a run-in with police, suggested a YouTube video on right of way, and let us off with my ticket. Eli and I went home after dropping our friend off and talked about what we were going to do about the Bong, as it was one of Jake's favorite possessions, and he is very materialistic.

For most people, it would be an inconvenience to lose a bong, but Jake's like a dragon, he has his special pile of shiny trinkets he loves and is very upset when he loses one. Given that he is going through a legal battle along with some tragedies in his life, we decided to not tell him as he didn't need the additional distress in his already uniquely intense situation.

We talked a bit more about the situation and decided we would go to our favorite smoke shop in the morning to see if they had any identical bongs in stock to replace it. It had to be the exact same bong.

Luckily, they had it. We put it on layaway and after 2 months of saving up the $150 for the massive bong, we did it.

We've decided that we'll tell him the full truth after he's out everything settles down, but until then we have to keep the secret.

I just felt like telling reddit, because me and Eli haven't told anyone about the incident just in case it were to get to Jake before we could tell him we already replaced the bong with a brand new Identical one. I feel bad for keeping a secret from him, but I feel justified as it's for his well-being.
