I wrote and published this essay on Medium today, and I was wondering if it might spark some discussion of one of my favorite Boyle films from 2007. Sunshine is a movie that, while it has some struggles, I really like the aesthetic and sound design. It was doing some very interesting things visually and in conjunction with sound, which I think we clearly see Boyle do again in 127 Hours.
While I was teaching a world mythology course, I decided to use the film as a teaching tool for the presence of mythology in contemporary film, and the other day I found those notes and from them wrote up my thoughts.
I know it's not perfect (trust me, I know), but it's me trying to offer a different perspective on the film. I thought it might provoke some discussion and, honestly, it's nice to have people read my work.
What are your thoughts on Sunshine? Boyle in general? How do you feel this film has aged as a sci-fi piece?
