hello, i hope everyone's well. i have recently been watching many of the classic Italian Giallo films, particularly the ones of Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci and of course Dario Argento. aside from the atmosphere and the dark tales, one of the things i adore so much about these films is the bright and beautiful colours of the images. i was wondering if there was anyone with more technical knowledge than me who would like to explain what makes the colours in these films "pop" so much more than films outside of the genre. i can also think of similarly colourful films, such as 2016's La La Land, but it seems the colours are a core characteristic of the Giallo genre. i know there are obvious choices, such as the costumes and scenes which feature different coloured lights. but how are those colours captured on the camera in a way that makes them appear brighter than other films, especially modern blockbusters, which look so grey in comparison. is it something to do with the type of film used, the kind of cameras or lenses? i apologise for my illiteracy with filmmaking techniques, but this fascinates me so i wonder if someone could shed some light. thank you.
