thoughts on Jean-Luc Godard saying he hates zooms in film?
Post Body

hey everyone, hope you're having a nice day.
i just saw a clip from Florence Plataret's "Godard on Godard" which debuted at Cannes earlier this year. it features Godard (one of my favourite directors and undoubtedly one of the all time greats and most influential) saying he hates zooms, that they are the enemy of cinema, and that you should "be at the right distance from the start". i'm not sure when exactly the clip is from, but i wonder if he had not yet seen the amazing effect that the dolly zoom produces, developed by Hitchcock and cinematographer Irmin Roberts for Vertigo. personally, zooms are some of my favourite camera "movements", especially in Martial Arts and Spaghetti Western films, which in fairness were most likely not really as established at the time of the interview. i wonder if anyone has any thoughts on this, do you think Godard has a point?
