How should I think when picking and counterpicking heroes in all-picked? (Detailed explanation inside)

For example: When do I pick an aggressive/defensive support? How do I look at both lineups and get a feeling of how we need to play a game?
A better example: Let's say we need a defensive support. What is the difference between WW, omni, dazzle, abbadon, and Shadow Demon?
I hope you understand what I mean. I want to make the best possible picks with the information available at hand.
