Atlanta's Missing and Murdered

I know this is a little later than the others, but I just finished this documentary and was very impressed. From all I have read and watched about these murders, I have been convinced that Wayne Williams did NOT kill the kids. I believe he was responsible for the two adults at least, and possibly the other adults but not the kids. I think his sexuality was suppressed and he was ashamed of it, so after having sex with the men, he may have out of fear of being found out or some other reason, he killed them.

I have said for a few years now though, to my poor friends and family that had to listen to me, that I didn't think he killed the kids. The method of killing is different among them, witnesses claim other people were involved, locations of body dumps are different and gender even varies. The children's backgrounds were different, there was some in very religious no nonsense type families who excelled in school (Yusef Bell for example) to one poor child that the police feel his mother who was a prostitute on different drugs may have been his killer. Not to mention the wide range in ages of the murdered, 28 is not a kid.

My theories rely on podcasts, old documentaries and other news items I have found. So these are my questions...

First of all, did the killings actually stop?

Mayor Jackson had been building Atlanta to be a mecca for black people to come to and have a chance to succeed and be in a culture that they were accepted in. Yes, I know that Georgia was heavy and still is heavy with the Klan. I currently reside in Georgia. However, Atlanta was different. It was drawing more and more people to move there. Yes, of course there was still great poverty as with any city. But Jackson was trying to build it up. He had tried to make the police force, which was made up of many Klan members "more black." He had recruits come in and train and graduate to become officers. This of course angered many, however it happened. So, with all Mayor Jackson was doing, and not doing - not informing the public about a possible serial killer targeting children - would he want to have it be known that the kids were still being taken and killed after Wayne Williams was arrested? Or did he have the information buried or not reported at all and hidden from the media? Possibly a small blurb about a kid that had disappeared or even misinformation to appear it wasn't related? Or, the killer(s) moved on to a new hunting ground.

Second, Why were witnesses ignored?

From this documentary and a podcast I listened to, first hand accounts told about witnessing TWO different boys on different occasions, taken into a building and raped and murdered. One was a boy who, forgive me I can't remember if it was his brother or his friend was taken by two men into the back of a store and held there while being raped and tortured then ultimately murdered. This boy told the police everything and nothing was done. The other from this documentary saw one boy taken by one man into an empty building and raped and strangled to death. There was even autopsy photos that backed up what the boy said, about him being strangled. It was not investigated thoroughly though. Both of these boys were on the list of murdered by Wayne Williams.

Third, How much was the Klan involved?

I felt the documentary did a good job investigating into the Klan and describing many aspects of it that most people, including myself, wouldn't know a lot about. The description of the Sanders brothers and their roles was very enlightening. I had already known about the incident with Geter, running his go cart into Sanders' car and the threats he made afterwards. The confidential informant who tried to do the right thing by Geter and his family, even went in wired for the GBI to get information. He got on the stand and risked his life to testify for Wayne Williams because he knew Geter wasn't killed by him. Sorry if anyone disagrees, but I thought the older man was a pretty stand up guy for that. Then the investigators dropped it. They supposedly had Sanders saying he killed that kid and would kill more on tape and because Sanders said "just a joke" they let him and basically the rest of the Klan get removed from suspicion. Then the tapes were destroyed... WTF?

Fourth, How about those fibers and dog hair?

So, how about them... this is a frustrating part, especially since the defense was never made aware of so much information, including some of the above mentioned. I understand that forensics was very new at this time and they were still learning and perfecting how to read samples and what not, but come on! The dog hair was stated it was a white hair and would be from a Husky or a Malamute. Then because Williams didn't have either of those dogs and a black and brown German Shepard with a little bit of white hair, it was changed to German Shepard with white to brown hair... The fibers that were found - could have been found in multiple places. Even the carpet company dumped into that river and the fibers could have been picked up from the river. Then it was later revealed they didn't match the fibers from the Williams' home, but did match some from Sanders' home.

Much like the popular theory of why OJ was not found guilty, the theory that Mayor Jackson and the police were trying to avoid a race riot and needed a black man to be held responsible was also popular to many that knew of this case. Which, like many profiles by FBI agents, a serial killer kills within their own race typically, would fit that a black man did it. However, I think there were at least 4 different instances that had 4 different killers, if not more. What better time for a killer to strike when the city was in chaos and children were being murdered, any pedophile could be interested in that.

As I mentioned above, I felt Mayor Jackson and the police were trying to avoid a race riot while it was apparent the KKK was trying to incite one. This was still not far from the 1960s in the south, which is where the KKK was revived at Stone Mountain, and race tension was very heavy.

As we all know, much of the police, GBI and maybe even FBI's work was not up to par and in some instances, completely hindering to the case. It is heartbreaking to see the families speaking about these lost children... children who are frozen in memory and many feeling guilty about this or that. Older siblings not paying 100% attention, letting their kid go sell stuff to try to earn extra money, sending kids to the store to buy this or that ingredient, or going to play and be kids.

I really would love to see justice served in this case and it worries me that we may never see it. Much of the city of Atlanta and law enforcement doesn't seem to want to admit they screwed it up and are content with keeping their heads down.

I am NOT saying Wayne Williams is an innocent man by any means, as I mentioned above, I feel he is connected to at least the two men found in the river. But to just stick everything else on him is injustice and allowed killers to stay free.
