(I've noticed a distinct lack of Finnish crimes on this sub, so I took it upon myself to do this little write-up. The crime itself is horrific, and although there's no pictures of the victim, it was a hard read.)

Lead-up:

In the city of Jyväskylä, Finland, in September of 2021, Olavi Aukusti Uusimaa, born 1985, went to the store where he met an acquaintance, a man born in the 1960s. The two got chatting, and eventually Uusimaa invited the victim to his apartment to have a couple beers.

The events:

As the two drank in the apartment, Uusimaa mixed the anti-psychotic medication in his possession into the victim’s drink, intending to incapacitate the latter. Allegedly, according to Uusimaa, he did this because he (the victim) spoke of aggressive things, like revenge and such.

Soon, the victim fell unconscious, which is when Uusimaa began strangling him with a charging cord from behind and poured corrosive toilet cleaner down the victim’s throat. He then waited for the victim to stop breathing, but when that didn’t happen, Uusimaa boiled water with an electric kettle and threw the water on the victim’s face and upper body, causing severe burns. As if that wasn’t enough, Uusimaa then fetched a kitchen knife and slashed the victim a dozen times on the upper body.

The whole ordeal lasted for approximately an hour, after which Uusimaa called his father, who told him to call emergency services, which he eventually did. The victim was lifeless at that point, his heart not beating, but was able to be resuscitated by the paramedics.

Aftermath:

The victim spent the following eight weeks in the hospital, four of them in the intensive care unit. He required several skin grafts due to the burns, and has lost all memory of the events of that day.

The District Court of Central Finland found Uusimaa competent to stand trial. The prosecutor demanded Uusimaa be sentenced for attempted murder, as there was intent to kill. However, the District Court considered Uusimaa calling the emergency services to be a sign of regret, and sentenced him to ten years for aggravated assault. He was to pay 66 300 euros of compensation to the victim. Uusimaa appealed against his conviction, and on the 13th of October 2022, the Court of Appeal lowered his sentence to 8 and half years.

Before this crime, in December of 2020, Uusimaa had set his rented apartment on fire and left the scene, causing property damage costing around 10 000 euros. This added half a year to his prison sentence, adding up to 9 years in prison.
