How did Peter Nygard get away with allegedly raping, sexually assaulting and trafficking dozens of women and girls around the world for more than 40 years?
We are Timothy Sawa, host of the CBC Podcast Evil By Design and a Fifth Estate producer, and Bob McKeown, host of The Fifth Estate.
We have spoken to many women who say they've been victimized by the Canadian fashion designer. There are victims in several countries, and many in the Bahamas.
The women — some of whom were as young as 14 at the time — say Nygard offered them modelling jobs.
Next, they would be invited to his palatial seaside estate in the Bahamas. Often to a party.
When they arrived, the women said, he’d get them alone.
Then he raped them.
Their lives would never be the same.
The Canadian fashion designer was arrested in December 2020 on a U.S. indictment and charged with sex trafficking and racketeering. More than 80 women accuse him of sexual assault or rape.
Nygard denies the allegations, saying they are part of a campaign to destroy his reputation by his former neighbour in the Bahamas.
It’s a dark and painful topic to have spent more than a decade investigating and defending in court. But it was just too important for us to let it go. So many lives have been forever changed by what happened. None of this would have happened without their trust in us to tell their stories.
