What turned Christianity into just so much talking?
Post Body

I volunteered with my church for a thanksgiving drive a few weeks ago, getting a lot of food and whole turkeys to people who needed it. It felt like the first church thing in years that actually mattered.

And then it was right back to sitting in a chair on Sundays, while a dude in a suit just “yaps, yaps, yaps, yaps, John 3:16, don’t bang before marriage, don’t listen to secular music, yap yap yap” and it just repeats every Sunday. I swear these guys are experts at saying literally the exact same thing in a million ways, or spending 45 minutes saying a heap of nothing that everyone already knows.

What happened in history that shifted the church from really doing work and service for society to just being a way for people who go to seminary to make money, and for ordinary people to gather and sit around hearing “God loves you! đŸ„°đŸ„°đŸ„°đŸ„°â€ all day? Why has the church and Christianity as a whole become this spineless, unorganized people group that stays quiet because we’re scared to offend people? Why does the church spend all day trying to get people for study groups or brunches or all this garbage that doesn’t matter instead of actually trying to make people’s daily lives practically better and letting God handle the rest?

Why is there no mission to practically help the world around us, but more incentive for bashing people for addictions or rule-breaking and inviting college-age people to the 245th “game night” of the year? Why are we more concerned about our Calvinist or Lutheran friends possibly having problematic theology when there are homeless and unemployment crises that no one is doing anything about? Shouldn’t we be the first ones on the front line doing something?

But nah. We sit back and blame government and atheists for everything while Joel Osteen helps us get our best life now and your pastor buys two private jets.

I’ve had to figure out my own life mission to keep me from going insane. Maybe if we were doing more instead of just talking and singing more I wouldn’t be as jaded with this whole thing.
