Over the past few days I’ve seen people I’m cool with IRL go absolutely vitriolic, dumping blame and hatred on black men and men in general (both of which I am) for the election results. I’ve refrained from making it known who I voted for, but used memes and sarcasm to make my stance known to other people who voted the same way. Luckily I haven’t gotten vitriol or blocked/unfollowed like a lot of others have for supporting who I supported, but the feeling of being completely isolated is continuing to grow.
In my years at college, I kept my own political worldviews 1,000% under wraps, and even kept the majority of my beliefs as a Christian under wraps until I was around other Christians. But it feels more and more like I’m hiding in the center of a mob, even filled with people who claim to be Christians, who are just waiting for me to out myself just so they can throw what I thought was friendships and some of the best memories I’ve ever had totally out the window.
I was born in 2001, and growing up I’ve seen how intolerable everyone has become towards everyone else. It feels like I’m the only person my age who sees that all these men and women in suits and ties, whether they’re in the church or the White House, only care about their own pockets, and everyday people like the rest of us can’t depend on them for salvation.
I miss the days when the most dividing thing amongst my friends was if you were Marvel or DC person.
