Secular child-rearing and Bible stories
Post Body

Hi, I think this is my first time posting in this sub-reddit, but I'm 8 months pregnant and this is what I was thinking about when I was trying (and failing) to sleep last night.

I was raised catholic, but am choosing to not raise my child with any particular religion. I have figured that I would attempt a broad exposure to different belief systems as stories that people choose to believe, with probably more emphasis on religions other than the big 3 than would be typical in North America.

What occurred to be last night was a few incidents in high school and university where there were discussions about poetry and philosophy that were influenced by the Bible. Because of my up-bringing I was able to competently discuss such influences, and even at the university level there were people raised in other religions who were at a total loss in these situations.

I was wondering what your thoughts on ensuring a child is competent to understand the cultural significance of the Christian religions without putting excessive emphasis on Biblical studies. My primary thoughts are to read the child bible stories inter-changeably with fairy tales and such.
