I was recently talking to my mom (baptist, very fundamentalist) about why I was atheist. I had prepared arguments and such, and was prepared for a legitimate discussion. I didn't exactly get that.
She got heated almost immediately, telling me that the only reason I'm atheist is so that my life can be, and I quote, "Grant, Grant, Grant, Grant, Grant, and then you die." Grant being my name. She said that the only reason I rejected religion was because it was a two way street in which I had to give.
I was somewhat confused, but told her that's not how I feel at all, and that there wasn't a need to attack me directly instead of talking about the issue at hand. Ad hominem, I know, but I don't want to sound like a smartass.
Anyways, all I really want are any ideas as to how to explain to her that this isn't the case at all. I attempted to explain my reasoning for being atheist, and how it was just my own personal choice, and she repeated what she had said earlier. Besides pointing out that her argument has a flawed, and incorrect, premise, is there anything else I could do to try and make her understand that I'm certainly not changing my belief system in order to be selfish?
Thank you all for you help.
