Could Atheism be regarded as a Religion?
Post Body

A friend of mine posted this

Me: Atheism is not a religion.

Friend: Yeah it is.

Me: It's the belief that there are no gods. Therefore it is not a religion, but the lack thereof.

Friend 2: Whats the definition of religion?

Me: The belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, esp. a personal God or gods. Straight off the internet so you know it's true. A-theism is disbelief in the existence of a supreme being or beings. Thus, it is not a religion. I don't mean to be annoying but if you address it as such you have misunderstood the meaning of it.

Friend: Religion is how you view the world and how you think everything came into existence. Just because you don't worship a God/dess doesn't mean you have a lack of religion. They, in a way, worship science. Science explains everything for them; how they came to be, how the earth was created, the natural laws between people....everything. If scientology can be a religion, so can atheism.

Me: Nerp. Atheism isn't tied to science, but many people, including religious ones, view science as a means of discovery and finding truth because facts are indisputable no matter what you believe. What you aren't getting is that religion is not how you view the world in general, religions must have supernatural aspects to be religions. I've stated the definition. Atheism is literally the opposite of religion. Scientology holds the belief of a supreme being, a god, that's why it's regarded as a religion. Atheists believe that no higher power is involved in any way. There are no set rules, dogmas, figures of worship, and science is not 'worshiped'. It's simply the lack of belief and many atheists have very different opinions on how the world was created, the innate nature of human beings and how everything ties together, etc.

Me: A nifty quote to get my point across. "Calling Atheism a religion is like calling bald a hair color.”

Any input, thoughts, corrections?

TL:DR - is atheism a form of religion, the very opposite, or something else?
