So I drive flatbed and have been doing it for about 3 months. I always try to over secure my loads like I have been taught. I gotten repowered with the load I'm currently on. The guy I repowered with says he's been with the company driving flatbed for 3 years.
Already this guy blows me out of the water as far as experience goes. So I didnt question his load securement to much. I did however look at what I could because it was tarped. I did however tighten the load whenever I got the chance at every stop I made.
Earlier today I had to slow down due to traffic. I didn't even hit the brakes hard. I was gradually slowing down. Suddenly I felt jolt. Wasn't a big one. I could easily right it off as a the road being kind of rough. Nothing felt wrong with the truck. I pull over after another 50 miles to do my lc/Tc. That's where I see my load telescoped forward.
I immediately call safety and tell them and they had me send pictures of the load tarped and untarped. As I'm pulling my tarps off I start to see how shitty of a job this guy did securing his load.
He didn't secure this load in layers. He only threw straps over the top of this 3 layered lumber load. I also think this load should have been belly wrapped. But then again. I only have 3 months experience. So what do I know? I'm still learning.
Also as I'm pulling the tarps off I can see this guy didn't even tarp this load right and ripping my tarps.
My biggest issue is I don't wanna get fired over this. I don't mind getting a lecture over securing loads or checking others securement. I realize now that I should have pulled these tarps off from the beginning and checked his securement. But I don't wanna lose my job over this.
P.S. to any newbie driver or flatbed driver. This is what I learned today. Take advice from more experienced drivers. But always double check them. They could give great advice but be terrible at their job when it comes to load securement.
