Company driver here looking to become owner operator in in nj 40 min from ports 1 hour from Philly 1 hour or less from NYC not that I wanna go there lol. Currently working flatbed make around 75k year working like 46 hour weeks with benefits and pto.
I did some research and this is some rough math to my expenses I don't have any contacts everytime I call trying to make contacts they want my mc dot # before they even talking any numbers. So my plan is to hit load boards Amazon and Uber freight meanwhile trying to make contacts for steady work.
I'm looking to only stay local willing to do occasional overnight if pays right. I'm hearing some local guys do 1600 a day others say only 600 gross.
How much money should I have saved up for emergency untill I start bringing in money??
I'm open to doing flatbed step or dry van I'm thinking about doing power only to start.
I know rates are bad now but also trucks are cheaper then before should I just stay company driver can I become independent I'm thinking about doing all the driving myself first couple years but ultimately get more trucks and drivers.
Any takes advice opinions lmk
