New driver, hauling doubles and triples (mostly), I've been with my mentor for about 2 weeks now. For the most part, I love the job, but there's one thing that bugs me, and I was wondering if you all could help me out.
My mentor has me take my 30 minute breaks at the fuel pump at truck stops. Partly out of necessity, because we can't exactly back a set of doubles into a parking spot and most truck stops don't have pull-through parking, but also partly out of laziness because he doesn't like walking. Or climbing in and out of the truck. Or anything remotely resembling physical movement.
I feel like a huge jerk for taking up a fuel space for that long. Usually I'll try to get behind someone in line, hopefully that'll take 10 mins, then I can inch forward into the bay for 10 mins, then inch up for the last 10 mins, so I'm not invonveniencing the poor guy behind me too much.
What is the etiquette for fuel pumps? Is it acceptable (or at least tolerated) to take 30 min breaks at the pump? If someone gets behind me in line, should I tell him I'm taking my break, or will that just piss him off?
When I get away from this mentor, is there a better way to take breaks? I know rest stops are an option, but depending on what part of the country I'm in, those can be few and far between. How do y'all take your breaks?
