How can I get ambient purple/blue light in while room?

I see lots of trip caves with the same kind of effect where the whole room appears to be filled with this purple or blue light but I can never see the ligh source in the photos/videos. I have some led strips which do an alrightish job but I don't like the way they look around the ceiling since they just stand out too much. What kind of light are people using to get the effect?
