Told to stop talking about wages

Hi friends,
Have had a travel NM and a recruiter tell me that I need to stop talking about wages, because it may cause a rift in the staff nurses.
Besides being federally protected speech, has anyone else been told this? Obviously we’re at will employment and can get canned for anything, but is this standard practice?
