I know that these people don’t understand the history behind the community when they suggest that words like ‘Transgender’ and ‘Queer’ are innocent and empowering while ‘Transsexual’ is dirty and hateful.
Even though Transsexuality was originally seen as a fetish it went through changes when more research was able to be done on the patients and even who was considered a patient starting in the 1920’s. It was always a medical terminology that went through natural changes of definition and inclusion like others have.
Transgender? That was created by a homophobic male in the 60’s that had a fetish for dressing like a woman and that was the definition of the term. Much like the original definition of the word Transsexual but it was butchered into todays all inclusive definition.
Ever wonder why certain people from the past didn’t call themselves transgender? Such as Marsha P Johnson? It’s because the definition didn’t include him because he was a Gay Man! He sure as hell knew the term transsexual so if he was actually trans he’d be using it. But these people would argue otherwise and say it’s because he wouldn’t have known about the word transgender when that wasn’t the case.
We can’t even explain this to them without getting banned or reported for hate. They don’t want to listen and because they’re the loudest, they get all the attention and are seen as the educators while we’re seen as the evil ones in the dark.
