When Tonics first hit the market people sceptical, rewriting your DNA sounded pretty scary and painful, but people came to find it wasn't either of those things especially with the promise of total reversibility to them. Soon they were everywhere every corner shop had a selection of the most popular Tonics, there wasn't really anything they couldn't do; make you stronger, thinner, taller, fatter, bigger boobs and whole lot more, if you couldn't find it in a Tonic bar then some places could brew you a custom one no questions asked. There were even a few traded on the black market, things like making you stupider or even changing your mind to that of a slave were possible. But then reports started trickling in people who had OD'd on Tonics or had a bad batch etc news articles such as "woman drinks boob-Tonics until she can't walk" or "woman orders custom multi-Tonic and becomes sex crazed slime." They were usually written off as people being irresponsible with them, thats the price of total genetic freedom people said.

Soon though it became clear repeated Tonic use was not only addictive but unstable, it could happen to anyone and the manufacturer stated that these haywire cases were untreatable, permanent changes to the victims.
