Working for Amtrak

Hello. I am interested in a career as a Conductor or Locomotive Engineer. I currently work at a hotel doing guest services. I would prefer passenger over freight. I've heard the work-life balance in passenger service is better. Freight also seems like a very gritty and industrial work environment. Is Amtrak a good company? Also, would Amtrak consider someone for Engineer without railroad experience?
