Problem Connecting with CarPlay

My CarPlay was working for quite some time. But then today it just stopped connecting with my phone. I went through all of the different steps. My Bluetooth & Wifi are both turned on. I'm connected with "Toyota Highlander" on my Bluetooth. I've got to "Manage Devices" & my iPhone is on the list, but not connected. I try to initiate a Connect for the iPhone, but it won't connect.

I'm looking at my WiFi and I'm seeing a network named something like "smartphone...." and my phone is connected to that. I don't know what that network is. It must have something to do with the car because it disappears once I shut the car off. But it was my understanding that the CarPlay wifi connection wouldn't show up in my list of WiFi connections. I was told it doesn't show up like a typical WiFi network. Is that true ?

I tried disconnecting with that "smartphone...." wifi connection and re-connecting my phone again but that didn't help.

When I've read the instructions for connecting to CarPlay they come to this step :

  • If you have a wireless connection, make sure that Bluetooth is turned on on your iPhone under Settings > Bluetooth. Then go to Settings > Wi-Fi, and make sure that Wi-Fi is also turned on. Tap the CarPlay network, and check that Auto-Join is turned on.

So, if CarPlay doesn't show up as a WiFi network then what are they referring to in that case ? I've looked around the WiFi settings of my phone and I don't see anything specifically labeled "Carplay".

I've even tried plugging the phone into the USB and re-connecting it and it still won't connect with CarPlay.

I'm kind of lost at this point. I've completely removed and re-added my phone to my car via Bluetooth, but am still unable to connect to Carplay. I just see my phone there as an available device in my Devices on my dashboard. But if I try to Connect it won't do it.

Any help you can give would be really appreciated.
