Leaving your dorm door open

I've been on campus for three days now and I still haven't really made any friends or talked to many people yet. I found an article that mentions leaving your door open to seem more "approachable." Has anyone here ever tried this? If so, how did it go and how did you prop your door open (mine is heavy).
Even still, I'm not sure how effective it would be when my room is at the end of the hallway...
